Helping Children and Families Thrive Together

What exactly do I help children and their families with?

According to the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, young children’s healthy development depends on the quality and reliability of a young child’s relationships with the important people in his or her life, both within and outside the family. They contribute “to the growth of a broad range of competencies, including a love of learning, a comfortable sense of oneself, positive social skills, multiple successful relationships at later ages, and a sophisticated understanding of emotions, commitment, morality, and other aspects of human relationships.” (National Scientific Council on the Developing Child 2004)

When children struggle, the family struggles. Marriages are stressed, challenged or destroyed as parents are overwhelmed and overreact to the problems that their child is facing. Worse yet, the child’s behavior triggers unresolved behavioral issues carried into the marriage which are then either acted out, suppressed or resolved in the “crucible” of the family. These old, new, and very real stress patterns should not be taken lightly. It is almost impossible to help a struggling child when the parents themselves are often uninformed in how they respond to familial stress. Where the coaches and therapists can help is in recognizing and helping to find practical methods to identify, separate, and correct false perceptions or drama brought forth by the child’s immediate problem.  Clarity and recognition allow parents to work together rather than in opposition and prevent the child exploiting unclear or unstable family situations. Children need this stability and clarity, but it is usually hard won.

Imagine that your child has ADD, struggles to keep up at school and daily life, lashes out or blows up because he or she cannot regulate emotions, has few friends due to low self-esteem, or has become unmotivated and disappears into video games, it is almost predictable that this behavior will trigger unresolved parental behaviors brought into the marriage. This negative spiral can have a tremendous negative impact on the family and a good coach can assist in recognizing such patterns as well as suggesting corrective action.

As a coach, my goal is to establish a “growth-promoting” relationship with my clients and the “family unit” as a whole. Improving and maximizing the child’s contentment, happiness and the desire to live a fulfilling life requires extensive parental support.  The child cannot do it alone. To enable positive change, the whole family system needs to be examined and supported. My “mission” as a coach, is to not only understand and enable  parents, and the child, but also to recognize and improve upon behaviors such that stress is reduced, tools made available, and a fundament established for the child’s growth. I work with the child in tandem with the parents to generate the best possible outcome.
